Pendleton/Anderson District Magistrates and Freeholders Court Records

Magistrates and Freeholders Court, heard criminal cases involving slaves and free people of color. These records contain court testimony, proceedings, and sentences. The court tried a variety of cases, ranging from vagrancy, petty larceny, and disorderly conduct to more serious crimes, which could incur the death penalty. The records below list: case #, name of Slave or fpoc, Trial Date, Offense, Verdict, Sentence, Slave Owner's name. There were a total of 429 cases heard from 1819 to 1865; with 836 individuals involved.
