Slave Deaths 1862 - 1863


The information below was found in the Upper SC Gen & Historical Society Piedmont, Vol. XI, No. 4, pp. 179 - 180

 

The following is a list of upstate South Carolina slaves who died while in the service of the State of South Carolina. They were impressed from their masters’ plantations to help construct fortifications, etc. As is usual in warfare, some died while in service. The masters filed claims with the government for reimbursement for the loss of property. The list contains the name of the slave, the claimant and his/her district of residence, the age of the slave, his cause of death, and the date of his death.

 

Jack (James E. Hagood of Pickens District) age 20 died of Typhoid Pneumonia 3 Dec. 1862

Jeff (Micajah Harris of Newberry) age 30 died of Typhoid Fever on 5 Oct 1862

Dick (Laban H. Chappell of Fairfield) age 23 killed by felling tree 3 Oct. 1862

Peter (John G. Brice of Fairfield) age 30 died of disease in Sept. 1862

Boson (W. Daniel of Edgefield) age 25 died of Typhoid Fever on 9 Dec. 1862

Andy (T. A. Carlisle of Union) age 30 died of Congestion of Brain on 1 Nov. 1862

Johnson (Henry Burton of Newberry) no age given died on 19 Oct. 1862

Ephraim (James B. Floyd of Newberry) age 27 died 28 Sept. 1862

Wyatt (William Blakely of Laurens) age 21 died of Congestive Chill on 10 Nov. 1862

Ben (Dr. D. C. Means of Fairfield) age 49 died of Chronic Dysentery on 10 Nov. 1862

Washington (William Young of Laurens) age 36 died of disease on 1 Nov. 1862

Elijah (Zachariah Hall of Anderson) age 30 died of disease [date not given; after 10 Oct. 1862]

Hooker (C. A. Saxon of Laurens) age 20 died of Typhoid Fever on 28 Nov. 1862

Dick (Samuel Jordan of Abbeville) age 20 died of Typhoid Fever on Oct. 1862

Tom (Joseph T. Baker of Abbeville) age 50 died of Dysentery on 23 Oct. 1862

Dave (Thomas Hyatt of York) age 22 died of Pneumonia on 18 Jan. 1863

Charles (Jesse Briggs of Union) age 32 died Pernicious Fever [date not given]

Jeff (Henry Rikard of Newberry) age 18 died of Measles, Pneumonia on 15 Feb. 1863

Elick (John M. Chalmers of Newberry) age 22 died of Acute Rheumatism on 29 Oct. 1862

Elbert (John P. Abney of Edgefield) age 33 died Typhoid Fever in Feb. 1863

Glaster (John Littlejohn of Union) no age given died of Typhoid Fever on 24 Oct 1862

Man (John Littlejohn of Union) no age given died of Typhoid Fever on 30 Nov. 1862

Linze (Barksdale Charles of Greenville) age died of Pneumonia on 31 Oct. 1863 (sic)

Jack (George M. Chaplin of Newberry) age 22 died of Typhoid Fever on 6 Nov. 1862

Billy (Mrs. Claudia H. Means, Executrix of Fairfield) age 28 died of Pneumonia on 1 May 1863

Ball (Esley Hunt of Pickens) age 26 died of Typhoid Fever in Nov. 1862

Tank (Esley Hunt of Pickens) age 23 died of Typhoid Fever in Nov. 1862

Amos (Thomas J. Price of Newberry) age 19 died of Typhoid Pneumonia 23 Jan. 1863

Jesse (Bluford F. Griffin of Newberry) age 20 died of Pneumonia on 10 Feb. 1863

George (Chesley Davis of Newberry) age 21 died of Typhoid Fever 3 Dec. 1862

Sam (George W. Glenn of Newberry) age 25 died of Measles 8 Feb. 1863

Marion (James B. Kay of Abbeville) age 19 died of Typhoid Pneumonia on 8 Feb. 1863

Jacob (Thomas Wilson Caldwell of Newberry) age 22 died of Typhoid Pneumonia 20 Apr. 1862

Hubbard (Thomas B. Wadlington of Newberry) age 35 or 40 ran over by RR cars on 4 Mar. 1863. This claim was suspended due to the proof of death being incomplete.

Green (William Knox of Chester) age 33 died 27 Sept. 1863 "Killed, enemy’s shell"

Adam (John Hagan of Abbeville) age 35 died of Pneumonia 1 Feb. 1863

Sam (Enoch Nelson of Abbeville) age 48 died of Dysentery on 21 Oct. 1862

Jim (George H. Miller of Fairfield) age 20 died of Typhoid Dysentery on 1 Feb. 1863

Spencer (John Speer, senr. of Abbeville) age 38 died 1 Feb. of Pneumonia

Edward (M. O. Talman of Abbeville) age 20 died of Inflammation [of] bowels on 29 Sept. 1862

Charles (Dr. D. C. Tompkins of Edgefield) age 20 died of Typhoid Pneumonia on 19 Feb. 1863

Bob (Eber A. Rabb of Fairfield) age 20 died of Typhoid Pneumonia 22 Nov. 1862

Jack (G. B. Riley of Abbeville) age 31 died of Measles 5 Mar. 1863

Wade(Samuel Agnew of Abbeville) age 25 died of Diarrhea on 12 mar. 1862

Frederick (Simpson H. Rogers of Edgefield) no age given died of Typhoid Pneumonia on 19 Mar. 1863

Enoch (Daniel Proctor of Edgefield) no age given died of Typhoid Pneumonia on 20 Mar. 1863

Butler (Alexander Austin of Abbeville) age 23 died of Measles on 5 Feb. 1863. Claim suspended. Proof of death incomplete.

William (Robert Brownlee of Abbeville) age 22 died of disease on 8 Feb. 1863
