Slave Deaths 1862 - 1863
The information below was found in the Upper SC Gen & Historical Society Piedmont, Vol. XI, No. 4, pp. 179 - 180
The following is a list of upstate South Carolina slaves who died while in the service of the State of South Carolina. They were impressed from their masters plantations to help construct fortifications, etc. As is usual in warfare, some died while in service. The masters filed claims with the government for reimbursement for the loss of property. The list contains the name of the slave, the claimant and his/her district of residence, the age of the slave, his cause of death, and the date of his death.

Wyatt (William Blakely of Laurens) age 21 died of Congestive Chill on 10 Nov. 1862
Ben (Dr. D. C. Means of Fairfield) age 49 died of Chronic Dysentery on 10 Nov. 1862
Washington (William Young of Laurens) age 36 died of disease on 1 Nov. 1862
Elijah (Zachariah Hall of Anderson) age 30 died of disease [date not given; after 10 Oct. 1862]
Hooker (C. A. Saxon of Laurens) age 20 died of Typhoid Fever on 28 Nov. 1862
Dick (Samuel Jordan of Abbeville) age 20 died of Typhoid Fever on Oct. 1862
Tom (Joseph T. Baker of Abbeville) age 50 died of Dysentery on 23 Oct. 1862
Dave (Thomas Hyatt of York) age 22 died of Pneumonia on 18 Jan. 1863

Hubbard (Thomas B. Wadlington of Newberry) age 35 or 40 ran over by RR cars on 4 Mar. 1863. This claim was suspended due to the proof of death being incomplete.
