Slave Deaths 1862 - 1863

The information below was found in the Upper SC Gen & Historical Society Piedmont, Vol. XI, No. 4, pp. 179 - 180

The following is a list of upstate South Carolina slaves who died while in the service of the State of South Carolina. They were impressed from their masters’ plantations to help construct fortifications, etc. As is usual in warfare, some died while in service. The masters filed claims with the government for reimbursement for the loss of property. The list contains the name of the slave, the claimant and his/her district of residence, the age of the slave, his cause of death, and the date of his death.

Dick (Laban H. Chappell of Fairfield) age 23 killed by felling tree 3 Oct. 1862

Peter (John G. Brice of Fairfield) age 30 died of disease in Sept. 1862

Boson (W. Daniel of Edgefield) age 25 died of Typhoid Fever on 9 Dec. 1862

Andy (T. A. Carlisle of Union) age 30 died of Congestion of Brain on 1 Nov. 1862

Johnson (Henry Burton of Newberry) no age given died on 19 Oct. 1862

Ephraim (James B. Floyd of Newberry) age 27 died 28 Sept. 1862

Wyatt (William Blakely of Laurens) age 21 died of Congestive Chill on 10 Nov. 1862

Ben (Dr. D. C. Means of Fairfield) age 49 died of Chronic Dysentery on 10 Nov. 1862

Washington (William Young of Laurens) age 36 died of disease on 1 Nov. 1862

Elijah (Zachariah Hall of Anderson) age 30 died of disease [date not given; after 10 Oct. 1862]

Hooker (C. A. Saxon of Laurens) age 20 died of Typhoid Fever on 28 Nov. 1862

Dick (Samuel Jordan of Abbeville) age 20 died of Typhoid Fever on Oct. 1862

Tom (Joseph T. Baker of Abbeville) age 50 died of Dysentery on 23 Oct. 1862

Dave (Thomas Hyatt of York) age 22 died of Pneumonia on 18 Jan. 1863

Charles (Jesse Briggs of Union) age 32 died Pernicious Fever [date not given]

Jeff (Henry Rikard of Newberry) age 18 died of Measles, Pneumonia on 15 Feb. 1863

Elick (John M. Chalmers of Newberry) age 22 died of Acute Rheumatism on 29 Oct. 1862

Elbert (John P. Abney of Edgefield) age 33 died Typhoid Fever in Feb. 1863

Glaster (John Littlejohn of Union) no age given died of Typhoid Fever on 24 Oct 1862

Hubbard (Thomas B. Wadlington of Newberry) age 35 or 40 ran over by RR cars on 4 Mar. 1863. This claim was suspended due to the proof of death being incomplete.

Green (William Knox of Chester) age 33 died 27 Sept. 1863 "Killed, enemy’s shell"

Butler (Alexander Austin of Abbeville) age 23 died of Measles on 5 Feb. 1863. Claim suspended. Proof of death incomplete.
