John Snowden born 1743 married Rachel Hopkins, daughter of Gerard and Mary (Hall) Hopkins, February 25 1783, and their children were Richard Phillip born 1785, Anna Maria born 1787, Gerard Hopkins born April 27 1788, John T. born about 1791, Margaret born 1793, Rezin Hammond born September 8 1796 and Rachel born 1798.
The Snowdens were members of the Society of friends. The Society of friends passed a law to "liberate your slaves or be disowned," so in order to remain in the Society of Friends, anyone holding slaves had to manumit them. For some Quakers, it was not tolerable to remain in a society that supported slavery, so many of them left and went west in 1806, where they founded Fredericktown in Knox County Ohio. In 1803 the Snowdens began to manumit their slaves.
