Total Value of Negroes $32,976.25

Many of these slaves are consistent with the names of families that I have researched. Canty, Cantey, DuRant, Johnson Thomas Pleasant, McBride possibly Oliver’s and White. The names have not been alphabetized because many times the families were grouped together in line.

John, Cinda and Simon are Johnson’s. William, Henny, Linda, William Jr. are Cantey’s. Wallace is a Johnson. Peter, Susanna, Job, Peter Jr. are Canty’s. Hannibal was a Richardson slave. Brewington and Flander were Canty’s. March was a McBride.

Anyone searching these names must understand the genealogy of the Slave owners. The Cantey’, Richardson’s and the Manning’s were relatives that went to South Carolina from England to Barbados to Virginia to South Carolina. Mary Cantey married a Richard Richardson and the Richardson’s married a Manning. The Richardson’s bought slaves which carry the names of McBride, Lawson, Pleasant, Pleasant’s, and Richardson. Many of the slaves owned by the Cantey’s kept the Cantey name while others used Canty.

This Equity Bill was found at the Sumter County Genealogical Society in Sumter, South Carolina, Dated October 28 1848, roll # 14.
